Beware of Rattlesnakes

I’m not afraid of snakes.

Someone in our little Palm Springs Vacation Party (Trademark pending) was, though.

And so this conversation took place on our way to explore the Salton Sea, but I’m omitting attributions in order to protect the innocent.

Person 1: So, should we get out and walk around?

Person 2: You can if you want. It doesn’t really look safe.

Person 1: What? It’s perfectly safe. It’s a park.

Person 2: I think I’m gonna stay in the van. You have fun.

Person 1: Okay, fine.

Person 2: Just beware of rattlesnakes.

Person 1: GAH! Why would you say that? There are no snakes.

Person 2: I was just reading the sign.

Person 1: What sign?

Person 2: The sign that says ‘Beware of Rattlesnakes.’

Person 1: What …? OH DEAR GOD, THERE’S A SIGN. You guys, I’m sorry. I’m not getting out of the car.

Driver: But … you just said there were no snakes.

Person 1: That was before I saw the saw the sign. If someone went to the trouble of making a sign, there probably are a lot of them. You don’t make a sign because someone saw a rattlesnake one time.

Driver: But …

Person 1: THERE IS A SIGN.

Bottom line: nobody got out of the car, and we drove to some place less snakey.
