The Week: June 16, 2014

Last week I felt kinda … “off.” I arrived late to appointments, I forgot random letters and words in emails and blog posts (if you read anything coherent from me, that was thanks to Rand’s editing), and in the end, I didn’t even get my weekly round-up posted. I know it’s Monday, and that it…

Quote from The Bartender’s Tale

May 9, 2014

I finished The Bartender’s Tale on the flight to Germany, at some nameless hour high above the North Pole. I decided to leave it with my dad, but there was one snippet I wanted to hang onto. So I took a photo of it. – Pretty easy to guess which part, I fell in love…

The Week: August 23, 2013

Aug 23, 2013

I’ve been having trouble sleeping these past few nights – I think my body’s trying to stay awake in some weird attempt to make the summer feel longer. But the grey skies are already moving in, and fall is, as much as I’d like to pretend otherwise, on its way. I’m accepting the end of…

– Remember episode of The Simpsons where Marge decides to take a vacation by herself and ends up at Rancho Relaxo? Most of you are probably nodding enthusiastically. Others might have vague recollections of it. And a select few might be shaking your heads and saying, “I’ve never really watched The Simpsons.” That latter group, of course,…

Rand and I are on the road this week, which means that I put this roundup together last week. So if something major happened in the last five days, the Geraldine of last Sunday (who is currently writing this post) doesn’t know about it yet. Hopefully, nothing I say will be too offensive in the…

Madrid: Then and Now

Our most recent trip to Madrid was our first visit to the city in four years. The last time we were there – in 2008 – Rand and I were still engaged; I’d just been laid off, and idea of starting a blog hadn’t even entered my mind. I finally went through the photos I…

Some Old Gems from Decembers Past

I am officially phoning this one in. I know, I know – it’s completely and utterly lame of me, but let’s be fair: no one is really working this week, unless eating Christmas cookies and shopping can somehow constitute work  (it sadly does not, otherwise I’d be making overtime). So rather than post something brand…

Los Angeles: City of … no way … hope?

Jan 12, 2010

The first time I landed in LAX, I was 14. I was spending a few days with my brother, who was a freshman in college at USC. I remember gawking at the layer of smog and the sprawling, bleached-out landscape. When I got off the plane, my brother, for possibly the first and last time…

  • Rand just gave me this pin for Valentine's Day and told me he's the Ralph Wiggum of our relationship. #choochoochooseyou #jonwye #valentinesday
  • An absolutely gorgeous venue for @andreadunlop's book launch. SHE REGRETS NOTHING is out today, and is a suspenseful, salacious, scintillating read. So proud of you, Andrea.
  • Doctor said my cold has ravaged my lungs. This is one instance where I could have gone without the metaphors.
  • How does my brother know how to say the exactly wrong thing to cheer me up? 😂
  • Sick day. Working on an op-ed that I can't turn in until tomorrow because I'm too busy watching This Is Us and feeling terrible. (BTW, I am *such* a Toby.)
  • The most handsome man in the world bought me a taco and sang me Billy Bragg. We talked about regret, and he told me he was sorry he took up so much of my life. And I laughed. Because it's not his fault that I can't stop thinking about him.
  • It's the 25th anniversary of Andre the Giant's passing. Here's the time I dressed up as him for Halloween.
  • I'm an almost-40-year-old woman who just bought herself a unicorn cookie because she's stressed about work. AMA.
  • I first met Chad around the time I had brain surgery. He'd just gone through the same experience with a very different diagnosis. He went on to have SIX more brain surgeries and was part of a litany of clinical trials for his brain cancer. Through it all he was funny and brash and so painfully honest about his experience. He was also instrumental in helping me finish my book - I sent Chad a chapter every month while working on my manuscript. He joked that I'd enlisted a dying man to help me meet my deadline. I hadn't emailed him in months, and just found out today that he passed away right before Christmas. It was a long time coming, but I am still blindsided by the loss.

Goodbye you wonderful, brilliant, exuberant asshole. I knew you'd break my heart.
  • Thirty-three years later, and she's still my hero. One year later, and I still miss her. #PrincessLeia #CarrieFisher #CarrieOn
