Lucy - oh, too true - while at least the play was in English (woefully, long, drawn-out English), I nevertheless felt a huge degree of guilt, knowing it was my fault. Which is funny, because if the situation was reversed, I wouldn't have blamed Rand or Ben (and it's not that they blamed me - rather, I blamed myself). Ah, well - we have an over-developed empathy gene, you and I. :)

I went to see a play that turned out to be in spanish. Which neither me or the friend I dragged along speak. Fortunately, there was an intermission but it didn't come until an hour and a half in. It's so much worse if you're the one that's responsible for the pain.

If your're coming over for SES (might be there myself, not made my mind up yet) then you 'might' enjoy this sculpture 'http://www.livincool.com/art/anish-kapoor-at-the-royal-accademy-of-arts-london' - won't make you laugh, but it is intriguing

I don't think this is a uniquely British thing. I find that I generally hate anything "critically acclaimed" and love the stuff they pan. I think if you watch too many plays or see too many movies (as critics must do in order to do their job) you lose touch with what normal people think is amusing and only see clever oblique references to other things you've seen.

Or maybe that's just me.

Aren't all of Beckett's plays his most depressing? Did you at least get ice cream? We saw a lot of shows when we were in London, but our favorite part was that you could eat ice cream in the theater.

No, Brits can give sincere reviews. Try Matthew Norman, The Guardian's restaurant reviwer - more than once I've seen him give scores of 1 or 0. Here's a recent example. http://www.guardian.co.uk/lifeandstyle/series/matthewnorman. Whilst this review of The Hulk is one of the finest reviews, of any kind, I've ever read: http://www.guardian.co.uk/film/2008/jun/13/actionandadventure.sciencefictionandfantasy.

It's just that nearly all theatre reviewers, in any country I've been to, think Beckett is ace. He's not. He's shite.
