The Week: Dec. 9, 2011

It’s been a chilly week for me here at home in Seattle. I’ve got trips to Florida and New York looming on the horizon (yes, it’s the same trip. No, I don’t know how to pack for that sort of thing. A parka and sandals, I guess), but right now I’m doing all the things that someone who doesn’t spend a third of their life on the road does – sleeping in my own bed, doing laundry, and baking lots and lots of cookies.

Now, if only there was some way of doing all three of those things at once. While I try to figure that out, you enjoy these links …

—————

NPR covers the changing face of Superman over the last 75 years (via everywhereist-reader and all around fabulous gal Holly).

—————

Michael Paulus creates skeletal sketches of some well-known and beloved cartoon characters. Tweety Bird is gonna give me nightmares.

—————

I haven’t seen the Twilight movies or read any of the books, but I kind of love Cracked’s take on Forever Dusk: The One Where She Has A Vampire Baby. Check out “If Twilight 4 Was 10 Times Shorter and 100 Times More Honest.”

—————

A huge congratulations to my brother, who wrote the story behind an absurdly fantastic new movie called – get this – 2 Headed Shark Attack. Check out the trailer, which features Carmen Electra, Brooke Hogan, and several other women in teeny bikinis (seriously, bro? Fine. Whatever. Congratulations, anyway.)

—————

I get a chill just looking at these photos from the windstorm that’s whipping across the U.K. right now.

—————

The breakdown of what, exactly, transpired during the ill-fated Air France flight #447 is equally sad and senseless (it was human error, and not a mechanical malfunction, that brought down the plane). The only plus side of the tragedy? We apparently did learn from it.

—————

Slate has the top five worst Christmas movies ever, featuring a cast of characters that include everyone from Santa to Satan. Why have visions of sugar plums dancing in your head when you can have really creepy demons in red pajamas?

—————

I am pleased to say that I’m not guilty of all of these … I mean, not recently: The 15 Things White Girls Love to Do on Facebook.

—————

Fact: Everyone needs a lucky stuffed bunny in their lives. Even T-Rexes.

—————

My friend Pete is constantly tackling life’s most difficult quandaries – like how to dry yourself off using only a hotel hand towel.

—————

My friends Mimi and Philip’s tale of how they reunited their daughter with her lost toy penguin made me laugh and cry, all at once. Share it with someone who needs a little more magic in their life.

—————

That’s it for me this week. Now, off to go tackle those cookies I was talking about …

That Air France link totally makes me think twice about flying to Paris. Reading that the incident could have been prevented just really gets to me. And I did a couple of those Facebook things.

Read the story about the peguin it was so sweet to see how much someone can love something so much and at such a young age.

  • Start by lazing about in that comfy bed with a hot cuppa, recipe books spread all around you while you choose your favorite freezer & refrigerator cookie recipes…

When it’s time to step out of bed, take the eggs & butter from the refrigerator and let stand so they come to room temperature while you’re sorting laundry and starting the wash.

Back to the kitchen to mix your cookie doughs, pop them in the fridge & freezer, finish up the wash while your refrigerator dough is chilling.

Pop refrigerator cookies in the oven to bake while you fold, & iron then brew another enormous cuppa and head back to bed with fresh baked cookies before another lazy snooze in that bed…

and next time you make it home for a short stay…frozen cookie dough waiting so you can make more yummy cookies in a hurry!! 🙂

I just arrived here via Time Magazine, and I love your blog, and I love a blog you ultimately sent me to, Jeff Wise the author of the Airbus crash article. Great writing on both counts. Thank you!!!

  • Brilliant. Now thanks to me doing a couple of those things on Facebook, I kinda could loathe myself.

Let me go post that now before I forget.

    =)

Thanks for the Air France story…although it’s one of the scariest things I’ve ever read.

  • The final, finished copy of my book arrived at our house today. Rand is very excited about it. (Everyone else has to wait until May 2nd, but you can pre-order it now. Link in bio.) #AllOverThePlace #AOTPbook #everywhereist #happydance
  • 9 foods we ate in Japan that I'm missing now:
1) Sushi!
2) Kaiseki (a multi-course meal with tons of delicious little plates)
3) Croissants (Japanese bakeries seem to have mastered them)
4) Okonomiyaki (multi-layered pancakes with noodles and all sorts of stuff)
5) Takoyaki (octopus balls)
6) Ramen (so many styles, all so good)
7) Yakiniku (grill your own meats!)
8) Tempura (so light and crispy)
9) Onigiri (Geraldine was crazy for these - the best ones came from 7-11 of all places)

  • Geraldine bought this frickin' adorable tea cup in Tokyo and I'm kinda jealous (even though everyone knows cups that hold hot liquids need handles!). #studioghibli #totorotea #randtookthis
  • Sayonara Japan. We loved you so much, we're already planning ways to come back. Thanks to @nicelleh & @wescarr for insisting we go, and for being our tour guides. #randtookthis #randaldineselfie #selfiesonaplane
  • It's not often you get to meet up with friends at Tokyo Station on the way to Narita, but we lucked out. Thanks @benhuh @emilyphuh for the great lunch and amazing company. #randtookthis #lastdayofvacation #selfiesatthetrain
  • That's no way to describe how stunning the ryokan & onsen is here. Maybe these 7 photos will help. It's definitely modern, but the landscape, the food, the lobby, the architecture, the service... everything is just spot on. And we even get to wear yukatas! #randtookthis #hoshiniya #karuizawa #beautifulhotels
  • Karuizawa has its own creamery, and they make both matcha and black sesame gelato. It's frickin' tasty. Who cares if we have to wear coats to eat it. #icecreamtime #lastdayofvacation #nagaifarm
  • Waiting for the bus. With a friend.

  • This stone church in Karuizawa was designed by an American architect, Kendrick Kellogg, and serves as a popular wedding facility. Fascinatingly, it has no right angles in the design (though Geraldine spent most of our visit trying to claim that angles on exit signs or edges of photos inside technically violated this rule). #randtookthis #stonebuildings #curvyarchitecture
  • We have been incredibly lucky to stay at many beautiful hotels around the world (mostly thanks to generous conference organizers). But, #hoshiniya in Karuizawa almost certainly belongs in the top 3. Every detail is stunning here. It's almost sad to walk out of the resort! #randtookthis #randaldineselfie
