The Week: March 1, 2013

Mar 1, 2013

It’s March. That’s the month that supposedly comes in like a lion and out like a lamb, right? But in Seattle, March comes in more like a slug (or possibly a damp mop) and goes out pretty much the same way.

However, right now? It is not raining. I mean, it will probably start in the next four minutes or so, but in the meantime, I’m going to rush outside and play in the sunshine not rain. You enjoy these links. 🙂

A medieval manuscript, peed on by a medieval cat. Some things never do change, eh?

The 2013 World Press Photo Awards have been announced. I could write a thousand words about each image on the subject, but these four will suffice: they are all breathtaking.

Hankering for more incredible photos? Check out the Instagram account of a photographer who is led around the world by his stunningly beautiful girlfriend. Their lives are basically JUST LIKE MINE AND RAND’S, and I totally look exactly like she does in a bikini. Yup. Totally.

Bed, Bath, and Beyond is apparently a palace of lies. I don’t know who to trust anymore.

Mental Floss delves into an important question: how many languages is it possible to know?

Anthony Bourdain, the Patron Anti-Saint of Travel, Food, and Writing, does an “Ask Me Anything” post on reddit. It’s an interesting read.

Talk about getting some perspective: here’s what our solar system looks like from a non-fixed point in the universe (spoiler: we might be organized in lovely little ellipses, but we’re still all hurtling through space).

—————

Beautiful and detailed, this account of how to spend 47 hours on a train and not go crazy reads like something by Hemingway. I loved it.

Hee. The evolution of U.S. and North Korean diplomacy.

I’m thoroughly delighted by the Justin Timberlake Does Things Tumblr. Some days, he holds a huge sandwich. Other days, he plays paddle ball with the ocean.

Aaaand, it’s still not raining! Whoo-hoo!

  • Very interesting article about how many languages is it possible to know. Geez 14, 50, 68!

The article about the train ride is SPOT on. My boyfriend and I took the Texas Eagle (mentioned in the article) from St. Louis to Chicago a couple years ago and have always joked about the “train people” ever since. They are certainly a special breed. This article did such an amazing job of capturing that experience. It’s oddly one of our favorite memories from our relationship solely because of how completely outlandish it was.

  • I always enjoy and look forward to your post each week with the links. You find the most amazing stuff! Those World Press photos were amazing. The one with the girl and the doll was a cross between art and creepy.

  • 9 foods we ate in Japan that I'm missing now:
1) Sushi!
2) Kaiseki (a multi-course meal with tons of delicious little plates)
3) Croissants (Japanese bakeries seem to have mastered them)
4) Okonomiyaki (multi-layered pancakes with noodles and all sorts of stuff)
5) Takoyaki (octopus balls)
6) Ramen (so many styles, all so good)
7) Yakiniku (grill your own meats!)
8) Tempura (so light and crispy)
9) Onigiri (Geraldine was crazy for these - the best ones came from 7-11 of all places)

  • Geraldine bought this frickin' adorable tea cup in Tokyo and I'm kinda jealous (even though everyone knows cups that hold hot liquids need handles!). #studioghibli #totorotea #randtookthis
  • Sayonara Japan. We loved you so much, we're already planning ways to come back. Thanks to @nicelleh & @wescarr for insisting we go, and for being our tour guides. #randtookthis #randaldineselfie #selfiesonaplane
  • It's not often you get to meet up with friends at Tokyo Station on the way to Narita, but we lucked out. Thanks @benhuh @emilyphuh for the great lunch and amazing company. #randtookthis #lastdayofvacation #selfiesatthetrain
  • That's no way to describe how stunning the ryokan & onsen is here. Maybe these 7 photos will help. It's definitely modern, but the landscape, the food, the lobby, the architecture, the service... everything is just spot on. And we even get to wear yukatas! #randtookthis #hoshiniya #karuizawa #beautifulhotels
  • Karuizawa has its own creamery, and they make both matcha and black sesame gelato. It's frickin' tasty. Who cares if we have to wear coats to eat it. #icecreamtime #lastdayofvacation #nagaifarm
  • Waiting for the bus. With a friend.

  • This stone church in Karuizawa was designed by an American architect, Kendrick Kellogg, and serves as a popular wedding facility. Fascinatingly, it has no right angles in the design (though Geraldine spent most of our visit trying to claim that angles on exit signs or edges of photos inside technically violated this rule). #randtookthis #stonebuildings #curvyarchitecture
  • We have been incredibly lucky to stay at many beautiful hotels around the world (mostly thanks to generous conference organizers). But, #hoshiniya in Karuizawa almost certainly belongs in the top 3. Every detail is stunning here. It's almost sad to walk out of the resort! #randtookthis #randaldineselfie
  • My favorite train food yet - an ikura box! We've got 6 hours on the Shinkansen today (Hiroshima➡️Kobe➡️Tokyo➡️Karuizawa) so needed a particularly large portion of train bento and snacks. Luckily, Hiroshima station, despite a smaller selection than most, delivered.
