This reminds me of a funny thing my mom used to do – In India, panhandlers are not an unusual sight; on occasion my mom would donate food or fruit or a coin or two but sometimes when she had nothing on her, she would insist on saying ‘later’ instead of ignoring them or saying ‘I don’t have anything to give you.’ It seems you should never say ‘I don’t have this or that’ as its bad luck. And all I could do was roll my eyes and retort, ‘well, don’t give him an ‘IOU’!
