Why I Travel: Reason #17

Posted on
Sep 8, 2009

Reason #17: It’s probably a bad idea if I’m left home alone. My husband travels. A lot. There are days when I forget where he’s gone. Someone will ask, and I’ll stare blankly for a few seconds, before answering, “Um … California?” I live terror of the idea that I’ll be involved in a car…

5 questions for the TSA

I’ve been reading the TSA blog, which is a dark and ugly place. Then again, so is the TSA itself. Seriously – have you seen the new Harry Potter movie? Remember the part with those freaky zombie guys who look suspiciously like Gollum? The TSA seems kind of like that. You want to tread carefully for…

This city guide probably won’t help anyone. Or rather, it will probably only help me, in a cathartic sense. It probably won’t help you plan a trip to San Diego, unless you plan on staying with my family. And while they’ll probably take you in, I don’t know that I’d recommend it. Or maybe I…

I’m in San Diego for a week with my family – I’ll do a proper wrap-up when I get home, after I’m done eating my feelings and drinking away my pain. It is not that I don’t love my family. Really. I do … yeah.

Random Musings About San Francisco

Jul 8, 2009

Last month’s Monterey also included a few days in San Francisco. Since it’s only a 1 1/2 hour flight, we go down to SF fairly often. As such, this is not a post about the things we’ve already done in San Francisco. There will be no mention of the Fisherman’s Wharf (which is like every…

  • Took a walk today, because, well, what else is there to do? Apparently a lot of folks had the same idea, because keeping my six feet of distance from everyone was tricky (I walked down the center of a lot of side streets). And while the sidewalks were full, the stores were empty and locked up - and it's so hard to see that and not know what the long term impact of this will be. A good reminder to support places if you can, keep your distance, wash your hands, buy gift certificates, tip your delivery driver, don't take more than what you need, and remember: we're all in this together.
  • Working on a book during a pandemic makes your brain weird.
  • When you own two couches, five loungers, and a love seat, and you both end up on the same chair.
  • Sobbing at this scene. So, so perfect. If you haven't seen I'm Not Okay With This - watch it. It's so wonderful.
  • Thinking I just need to make all of @alisoneroman's recipes and write about it, Julie & Julia style.
  • When your friend catches you going full Lady and the Tramp with your beloved over a noodle.
  • Latkes with dill and shallots, topped with creme fraiche plus salmon roe. Merry Chrismukkah to all.
  • Okay, I'll admit: I really like how these came out. I need to get more adventurous with glazes, but I'm so digging this shape.
  • A sneak peek at the photoshoot that @hayleyyoungshotme did this morning at @majesticbaytheatres. We're going to be featured in an issue of Seattle Magazine early next year - about Seattle couples. Super excited. Details and more of shots of amazing hair as we get closer to the publication date.
  • Couldn't see what the barber was doing, but when he said "You want a design?" I replied, "HELL YES" and this happened. I'm delighted with the results.
